Protecting the environment
To care for nature, we are developing agroforestry, creating favourable habitats for bats and bees, and actively helping to preserve natural balances.
nature at the heart of our actions
Covering 103,200 hectares in 2023 across the whole of Gironde, Bordeaux is the largest AOC vineyard in France. It is also one of the oldest, with 2,000 years of shared history between its wines and its region.
For more than ten years, our wine community has been investing in improving its environmental practices, in line with the expectations of consumers and wider society.
Proof of this ever‑stronger commitment by the women and men of Bordeaux?
Today, over 75% of our vineyard area is certified under an environmental scheme (Organic/AB, HVE, Terra Vitis, Demeter, etc.), compared with just 35% in 2014.
Far from the outdated image of a static monoculture, we strive to anticipate change, innovate and adapt collectively to preserve our resources and safeguard our ecosystems. Together, we are tackling major challenges such as climate change.
This is the path we have chosen to give back to nature what it so generously offers us!
Our key objectives:
- Encourage a circular economy;
- Reduce the use of plant protection products by favouring alternative methods;
- Preserve and enhance biodiversity;
- Maintain drainage ditches;
- Plant hedgerows;
- Sort and recycle waste;
- Manage energy consumption responsibly (water, electricity, fuel);
- Produce renewable energy;
- Work towards carbon neutrality by 2050.
On the
ground
- 39% greenhouse gas emissions in 2020 (vs 2007);
- More than 75% of vineyard area under environmental certification;
- 19 species of bats recorded in the Bordeaux vineyard.
Essai Vin Cœur
Objective: a meaningful, large‑scale project with strong social and environmental impact.
- Coexistence between trees and vines through an agroforestry project supported by a network of partners;
- 2,590 trees planted thanks to the 259 points scored by Union Bordeaux Bègles in 2023;
- Planting carried out by youth associations.
