Biodynamic viticulture

Today, a growing number of Bordeaux wine estates are embracing biodynamics, drawn by its holistic vision of the vineyard as a living ecosystem.

Demeter is a European biodynamic certification whose name directly references the Greek goddess of fertility. Among its many requirements, two core principles stand out:

  • A Demeter‑certified biodynamic wine must come from grapes grown in tune with the rhythm of the seasons and the lunar calendar;
  • The soils from which Demeter wines originate must be cared for using natural composting and fertilisation practices, such as preparations based on cow manure.

The Biodyvin label was created by French winegrowers themselves. Like Demeter, it certifies wines produced according to biodynamic principles. In concrete terms, it guarantees:

  • Consideration of astral influences in vineyard management;
  • Soils nourished with preparations made from plant, animal or mineral materials, thereby helping to reduce the grower’s environmental footprint.

In 2019, 17 Bordeaux wine estates were certified Biodyvin, representing 403 hectares of vineyards.
